Whether you currently work outside of the home, or if you are a stay-at-home parent, you really can make money online. With so many opportunities out there the problem most people encounter is simply not knowing what type of business to start. But determining what business is right for you may be easier than you think.

Contrary to what I have read in many places, the first step in choosing the right business is not understanding the business. Rather it is understanding yourself. Forget about business for a moment and just look at your skills, your personality, your acumen, and what you enjoy doing.

Are you a good writer? Are you good at talking to people? Are you creative? Do you enjoy detail work? Are you a good motivator or teacher? Do you like to make phone calls? What are your hobbies? There are literally hundreds of affiliate programs that will enable you to promote products or services you are interesed in and in a way that fits your unique giftings. When done right, affiliate marketing can be quite lucrative.

There are many fine companies out there. Most people don’t take the time to stop and think about there options before rejecting the notion of making money online or (probably more often) diving into the wrong type of home business for them. So a little advance self assessment helps in making the right decision.

The internet is loaded with make money online opportunities. Here is a checklist I would recommend before you sign up with an online program for making money.
1. Type the name of the company into google or some other search engine and see what others are saying about it. If too many negatives surface don’t sign up.
2. Study the compensation plan. If it is too complicated to understand then chances are so is the plan for how you will make money.
3. Find out how long the company has been in existence. If it is in the launching stage (which is how many of them are promoted to get you to join) you should exercise great caution before joining. No track record means just that and the fact is the majority of online businesses disappear after a short time span. It is much safer to choose a program that has been around for at least three years.
4. Check to see if the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau of the state where it is located. If it is not don’t join.
5. How much does it cost to participate (i.e. become an affiliate)? If the cost is high you will be told that your commissions will be high too. However, is it realistic to assume you can get many other people to join a program that is high cost? Think twice before spending too much money to join. Better to join a low-cost program and use your discretionary money for advertising. Very few online programs will tell you up front that you have to advertise. But you will. How else will get anyone else to join, and thus make money?

I have discovered that most people who want to make money online think the process is a lot easier than it really is. I believe there are two reasons for this kind of thinking. It’s not only uncaring to do this, but in the long run it helps no one. Maybe you will derive short-term gain just by getting someone else to buy your product or idea, but you won’t build a sustainable business this way. If you want to make money online you will do it best by helping others do the same. It endears them to you, it makes you feel better because you have helped someone else, and it builds a strong, loyal, and sustainable income base for all concerned.
