“Back in 2002, Stanley Gyoshev and Assen Vassilev set out to launch an easy-to-use online travel reservation site called Lessno.com. Standing out among established players like Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity may seem next to impossible, but Lessno is gaining ground thanks to “paid search” advertising on the Web.

Say you type the phrase “buy flight to NY” into the Google search engine. The ten results listed along the top and right of the page will contain small, text-only ads, each with a link to a travel-related Web site. Companies pay for the privilege of getting such placement when users type in specific keywords. In extreme cases, global online behemoths like eBay might bid on millions of different buzz phrases at Google and Yahoo!

The beauty of paid search is that marketers can tailor ads for specific products to a specific audience–and that moves merchandise. Since Lessno began its paid search campaign (through Google), traffic to its site has doubled, and the company’s revenues are up 60%. “Paid search is the No. 1 promotion tool a new online business should use,” says Vassilev. “Returns are often immediate; it is easy and cheap to experiment and hone the message; and it is usually quite affordable.”

“There’s a huge difference between network marketing and pyramid schemes. Learn the truth here.

To help you understand what network marketing is, I must first explain what it isn’t. First, network marketing isn’t a pyramid scheme. Pyramids are programs similar to chain letters where people just invest money based on the promise that other people will put in money that will filtrate back to them and somehow, they’ll get rich. A pyramid is strictly a money game and has no basis in real commerce. Normally, there’s no product involved at all, just money changing hands. Modern-day pyramids may have a product, but it’s clearly there just to disguise the money game.

Network marketing is a legitimate business. First, it’s based on providing people with real, legitimate products they need and want at a fair price. While some people do make a lot of money through network marketing, their financial benefit is always the result of their own dedicated efforts in building an organization that sells real products and services.

Pyramids are illegal and are based on taking advantage of people. For a person to actually make money in a pyramid scheme, someone else has to lose money. But in network marketing, each person can multiply his or her efforts, skills and talents by helping others be successful. Network marketing has proved itself as part of the new economy and a preferred way to do business here and around the world…..”

“There are two ways to approach affiliate marketing: You can offer an affiliate program to others or you can sign up to be another business’s affiliate. As the business driving an affiliate program, you’ll pay your affiliates a commission fee for every lead or sale they drive to your website. Your main goal should be to find affiliates who’ll reach untapped markets. For example, a company with an e-zine may make a good affiliate because its subscribers are hungry for resources. So introducing your offer through a “trusted” company can grab the attention of prospects you might not have otherwise reached.

You should also make sure you aren’t competing with your own affiliates for eyeballs. Any marketing channels you’re using, such as search engines, content sites or e-mail lists, should be off limits to your affiliates. Put marketing restrictions into your affiliate agreement and notify partners immediately. It’s your program–you set the rules. Or, if you prefer, you can let your affiliates run the majority of your internet marketing.”

Our 3,271 survey respondents told us that online overall was a huge portion of their budgets. It was 56% of total budget for B-to-C marketers and 40% of total budget for B-to-B marketers. While this is fairly normal for B-to-B marketers; the B-to-C data is skewed by our high readership of marketers in ecommerce/multichannel retail, travel/hospitality and financial services.

AOL released sensitive search data

Earlier this month, AOL released sensitive search data detailing 20 million searches preformed by 658,000 subscribers. While the AOL data obviously raises privacy concerns, it can contain useful information for search engine marketers.

Which result page gets the most clicks?

The AOL data allows us to find out how many people visit more than one result page on AOL:

91.63% of the AOL users clicked on the results on the first result page. Only 4.49% clicked a result from the second result page, 2.19% clicked a result on the third result page and even less people looked beyond the first three result pages.

Which search result position gets the most clicks?

The AOL data also allows us to find out which search result gets the most clicks. The following diagram shows the percentage of user clicks per search result position:

Being #1 on the search results is best by far. 47.16% of the users clicked on the first result. That means that the first position in the search results gets almost half of the traffic.

It this also true for Google and Yahoo?

The numbers are for AOL users. Google and Yahoo users might be from a different demographic group than AOL users and they might have different search behavior. AOL users are often less tech-savvy, when compared to Google users.

What does this mean to your web site?

The AOL data shows how important it is to be listed on the first result page. The higher your search engine rankings are, the better.

To be listed on the first result page on Google and other major search engines, optimize the content of your web pages and make sure that your web site has good inbound links.

Optimized web page content and good inbound links are the most important factors for high search engine rankings. If your web site has both, it will be ranked on the first result page of all major search engines.
