Even in my own personal home based business, I occassionally will suffer from attacks of procrastination. Putting off cold calling, follow-up calls, or even support calls to your downline can affect the growth of your business.

Breaking the procrastination habit starts with your attitude. You must develop a sustainable motivation and understand the pain of procrastinating is worse than doing what you need to do. Braking the procrastination habit is not easy… but you can begin by setting benchmarks.

Procrastination is the #1 killer of work at home success. When we are uncomfortable in doing a task, we will often turn to do the things in our home business which we are most comfortable doing. Such as checking our almost non-existence downline reports or reviewing product information.

Such busy actions, which are the things we feel most comfortable doing, will never allow us to fully achieve our full potential. Keeping busy versus taking the necessary actions (i.e. prospecting, recruiting, follow-up, etc.) will always keep us wishing for work at home success rather than achieving our success.

It is our procrastination which keeps us in the comfort zone of our busy-nest rather than allowing us to be in action in our home based business. It is only after you break the curse of procrastination by stepping into the uncomfortable zone that you will begin to progress toward your goals and dreams.

Taking action in your work at home business will help you to become more comfortable with what you currently are uncomfortable doing in your business. The more you do the things you know you need to do, the more you will develop those skills and you will begin to see yourself succeeding.

Realize, success will not come overnight. In fact, your skills and abilities will not develop overnight either. You MUST take small steps and it is these small steps of progression that will help you create the long term success you deserve.

No one can build the home based business for you and this also means no one can take the action steps for you. You MUST make a commitment to consistently take action and take the action regardless of how difficult or uncomfortable you feel.

A question often popping in our minds as we strive to succeed in our home based businesses, is, “why do others succeed and we seem to struggle?” Fortunately, you don’t have to ask that question any more!

You and I were made to achieve. We were born with a natural desire to achieve and succeed. We have the power within us to unleash this desire into a burning desire to achieve and succeed in all that we do. Realize, this power we have internally has not have been given to us to just let the power sit idle. Nor were we given this unique personal power of achievement without also being given the ability and opportunity to realize it.

You must first know your strengths and weaknesses before you can be a real achiever. Take some time to think about your home based business and what you want your business to be. Once your strengths and weaknesses are identified, you can begin working toward your goals and dreams.

Keep a firm understanding of the difference between achievement and success. Yes, there is a difference between achievement and success. Achievement is the knowledge you have studied, applied, and result in moving you forward in all you do. Success is being praised by others.

What this means to me is that home business success does not come easily. It comes through sacrifice. It means giving up present pleasures for future benefits. Every time I do not give time to my business and get lazy I am actually robbing myself of a successful future. It is said that people are motivated by either plain or pleasure. So what motivates you- pain or pleasure? What motivates me is the pain of the likelihood of having a future of financial struggles. I do not want to have those struggles so I am willing to put in the time to create a future of financial security. The problem then becomes developing a sustainable motivation that will drive you towards disciplined action. Andre considers internal motivation to be like a muscle. Are you exercising that muscle every day so that you get into the daily discipline of action? My struggle has not been so much getting into action but more so devoting ample time towards study. The quote above has motivated me to get into my training at a more consistent level…especially the part “study while others are sleeping”.

Over 2000 years ago the author of the book of Proverbs correctly identified pride as a major cause of failure. The reason pride can be so devastating is because it blinds us to reality. Being blind to reality prevents us from responding to situations in ways that will best benefit us.

I have seen marketers start to succeed in their online business. They master the prospecting process and become proficient in recruiting new distributors. Then one of several things can happen. They may stop learning and improving themselves because they no longer feel they need it. The result is a gradual loss of motivation and ends with the inability to adapt to the ever-changing marketing environment. They may get over confident in their track record. They may even try to double their efforts with the idea that it will bring twice the results. Pride often leads them to find that they have lost focus on the fundamentals that got them there in the first place. This is because pride rejects reality and substitutes it’s own instead.

Then there are those who have achieved what most would call major success – a solid six-figure income and a thorough understanding of the business. Still, occasionally these people fail. The reasons usually lead back to pride. Pride makes you inflexible and gives you the false belief that you are infallible and immune to failure. On the contrary, humility is an approach to life that holds that you can learn from others and that every part of business and life is subject to continual review.

This holiday season, recognize what you have and be thankful for it. Most of all recognize that you have the ability to direct your own destiny.
