Entrepreneurs often go into business to avoid the doldrums of Cubicle Land.
But then they find themselves skipping showers, piling papers on their dining room tables and feeling isolated. They miss the office — and the copiers and water coolers and secretaries that come standard.
Entrepreneur Josh Bereano, 38, said he rolls out of bed each morning in his Hawthorne Hills neighborhood to check his e-mail. He feels cut off from the work force sometimes.
“People don’t look down at home offices anymore, it’s natural,” said Bereano, who owns the video Internet marketing company Direct Marketing Inc. But still, it’s good to “just get out of the house and spice up the workday.”
My Day Office, a new Belltown business, hopes to cater to folks like Bereano — mobile workers who don’t need, or can’t yet afford, a long office lease. It will offer a la carte office space and services.

…Blasingame, a small business expert, answers so many business-related questions that he recently launched a new Web site, askjim.biz, which functions as a search engine for people looking for business advice.
CNN: What were the circumstances that led you to work from home?
Blasingame: I’ve been home-based a couple of times, but I’m not now. The main reason people work from home is it allows them to start a business without having to pay the expenses of an office somewhere else. A lot of people start a home-based business part time. They do their job, they come home and they set up a little shop in the den or the attic or the basement … and it allows them to literally grow a business one teeny tiny step at a time without making a huge infrastructure decision. The last time I was home-based was in ‘89, and I started a consulting company.
CNN: What are the qualities of a successful home-based business?
Blasingame: Discipline. First is discipline. You’ve got to be able to separate your work from your personal life. You’ve got to be able to set working hours so that when you work, you work, and when you’re not working you have quality personal time. You’ve got to make the decision to turn the computer off and not take e-mail. You’ve got to be able to say, “This is a job, it’s just a coincidence that it’s in my home, and so I’m going to work 8 to 5.”
But also you can time shift. You can say, “I’m an early morning person who has to pick my kids up at 3 o’clock from school.” So you can work 5 till 7, get up and take the kids to school, come back and work till 3 and go get your kids and come back. You don’t have to work a full shift like a regular 8 to 5 kind of thing.
But whatever you’re doing, you have to have regular hours, and you have to have the discipline to stick to those hours, otherwise you wind up not really getting a lot accomplished.
CNN: How does telecommuting fit in with being home-based?

From StartupNation.com:
One of the basic financial principals of being in business today: your revenues can be offset against your expenses.
Sure, some expenses, like meals and entertainment, may be only partially deductible. Other expenses may have to be written off, or “depreciated,” over a period of years. But the basic fundamental concept - revenues justifying expenses - is still pretty easy to understand and explain.
But what about those expenses you rack up before your business even opens its doors, your business startup costs? There is good news here, and it has nothing to do with saving money on car insurance. Once you open your business and start generating revenues, you can write off many of those initial business startup costs at tax time.
But there is bad news…the rules for taking advantage of these deductions are not as straightforward as they are for your business’s ongoing expenses.
Six steps to deducting your home business startup costs…click here.

From Entrepreneur.com:
Even with your great idea, thorough research and hours of hard work, one rule still applies: Nothing is certain in home business. No one can unfailingly know if a new product will succeed, how investors will receive a startup idea or whether a company will survive past the one-year mark. So how can you increase your odds of, well, beating the odds?
Whether it is trying to turn a web visitor into a customer, getting a purchase order out of a cold sales call or maintaining a stress-free lifestyle, you’ll face a series of challenges and opportunities to make the leap to success. Every day, companies are started, new products launched, sales made and e-commerce conducted. Clearly, entrepreneurs can overcome the odds. Here’s how to be on the winning side of the entrepreneurial equation.
1. Build to Last
About half of companies don’t survive past four years, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy. That’s much better than the outdated notion that 90 percent of startups fail in the first year. But even if you plan for the long haul, the odds can still be against you.
Fortunately, serious startup entrepreneurs don’t let those kinds of statistics stop them from pursuing their dreams. Take Carol Fitzgerald, who survived pretty bad odds. Her company, The Book Report, was one of 46 internet startups AOL funded a decade ago. Of those 46, just four are still in business, and Fitzgerald’s New York City-based book review website is one of them. Fitzgerald, 50, says she did it with passion and focus. “Start with the employees and making them happy,” she says. “Then it’s about customers and making them happy. Then it’s vendors, and beyond the vendors, it’s the community.”……Full Article Here

Combining marriage and business is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. It requires serious consideration and answers to some tough questions. Here are 10 tips for running a successful home-based business with your spouse:
– Determine if you can work side by side. Ask yourself honestly if you can work patiently alongside your spouse day in and day out, and then go from business partner to life partner after work. If you can’t picture yourself making this transition, then you probably should not run a business together.
– Discuss your goals. Are your visions for the business the same as those of your spouse? Even the strongest marriage will be tested if you are working at cross-purposes.
– Write a business plan and solicit feedback. Once you detail your vision, show it to a consultant for an objective opinion. There is tremendous value in feedback from an unbiased source.
– Define each person’s role. The roles can be flexible (and will likely have to change over time) but must at least address the basics: who will keep the books, who will do the shipping, etc.
– Keep the lines of communication open. Don’t be critical of one another — and don’t be dismissive or contemptuous of your partner. Confront the challenges of the business, not one another……Full Article

From Entrepreneur.com:
If you still think social networking sites are just for teens and college students who want to display their personal lives online, think again. Social networking sites also make great marketing tools. If you choose one that caters to your target demographic, you can set up a profile, attract prospective customers by offering interesting content and encourage people to go to your website or storefront. And in the spirit of guerrilla marketing, the cost is next to nothing.
One great way to start finding new prospects is by targeting your local area. MySpace, for instance, allows you to target zip codes. This powerful tool resembles what many home businesses do in higher-cost direct marketing campaigns. You can go from having no contacts to a full list just by inserting a zip code or geographical radius specification.
Once you identify target contacts, invite them to enter your circle of networking friends. On MySpace, these contacts are known as MySpace friends and show up on your MySpace home page. Your new friends can be repeatedly contacted in a variety of ways, including bulleting posts, event invites and personal messages. Repetition is the key to any marketing. Doing it at no cost will impact your bottom line in a positive way.

In an article published in TAXES magazine, Bruce J. Squillante, Senior Tax Attorney at Amway Corporation, addresses the so-called “hobby-loss rules,” and how it applies to network marketers.
What exactly does the term “hobby-loss” mean? In the most basic terms, distributors must run their network marketing home businesses with the intention to make a profit in order to legally deduct losses from their business against other income. The problem is that the definition of “for profit” is not as simple as you’d think. Existing laws require that in order to qualify for business deductions, every business, almost without exception, must show a profit in at least three out of five consecutive years. If you don’t, then the IRS can seek to prove that you are really only engaged in a hobby without profit motive. That means no deductions.
The law provides a “presumption” to taxpayers that their activities are engaged in for profit if certain condition are met. However, as the article points out, “There is no single dispositive factor. A determination of profit motive is not made by comparing the number of factors showing a profit motive to those showing a lack of profit motive.” Below is a brief summary of the relevant factors:

For many network marketers this home business is like a religion to them. They like to argue about what company is THE BEST, about what product is THE BEST and about what compensation plan is THE BEST. The truth is that there is no ONE perfect company, there are many. And what appeals to you won’t appeal to everyone. This arguing would all be quite amusing if they weren’t so serious and if the topic didn’t derail so many businesses in the process. Keep in mind that during the average 3.5 year career of a network marketer less than 5% ever earn over $200 per month in net profit. Most don’t even break even.
This is a problem not with network marketing; after all we can parade success stories in front of you all day. We can also point to similar failures in other industries. No, this is ultimately a problem with the marketer. Lack of money, lack of knowledge and lack of skills are all fundamental factors in failure. What is often overlooked though, is the importance of having a good company to promote.
Understanding what it takes to find a winning network marketing program is critical, because that’s where it all begins. Make a poor choice here and it will haunt your entire marketing effort. No matter how good your marketing, if you have the wrong offer for your prospects, or the wrong offer for you, you will fail. I’m sorry to be that blunt but that’s simply a fact. Realize that “network marketing” is not a commodity. Realize that a “system” is not a business in and of itself. There are a lot of scams and pseudo-scams that focus not on what’s actually important in business, namely selling the product and/or service, but on the system. According to the FTC and legal precedence, this is a sure sign of trouble ahead. Just stop by the FTC’s web site (www.ftc.gov) and you’ll see a steady stream of scams the agency shuts down. Now, don’t get me wrong, a system is a fundamental part of a good network marketing business. The question you need to ask is, “Is the system all there is to this business?”

Back many years ago-when being in a home business MLM meant you were either in Amway or Shaklee-there was only one way to work a program. You made your prospect list in the small spiral notebook that you carried everywhere- because you never knew when you’d remember the name of someone who wasn’t on your list yet! You wrote down everyone on your Christmas card list, anyone you did business with, all the names in your high school year book-yes, everyone you had ever known-including your mother-in-law (no-prejudging now!).
Then came the hard part. You called each name on your list to tell them you had something important that you needed their opinion on and was Tuesday or Thursday better for them? We NEVER gave any information over the phone! To understand this new marketing concept a person had to “see the plan”! Get those people and bring them to the meeting! Tell them that you’d be in their neighborhood anyway (OK, so they lived 30 miles from you) so you’d be happy to pick them up!
Then a man in a navy blue suit with a red tie (the woman in her pastel shirtwaist dress would be sitting on the side of the stage with a beauty pageant smile… and never take their eyes off of HIM! ). He would stand up and draw circles on a white board to show us how we too could be free and living on the beaches of the world! We’d all take notes and make encouraging, enthusiastic comments to our prospect… who was lost in that maze of circles we knew and loved so well.

From Entrepreneur.com:
In just a few years, blogs have become a phenomenon. Every day, an estimated 175,000 new blogs and more than 1.6 million blog updates go online, according to Technorati, a blog tracking firm. As of late January 2007, Technorati was tracking 63.2 million blogs.
This explosive growth raises the question: Should your home business start a blog? I believe you should, if for no other reason than to take advantage of an effective marketing tool. In a recent survey of business technology marketing executives by research firm MarketingSherpa, blogs were voted the No. 4 tool for generating sales leads.
Like any other marketing tool, blogs are most effective when used properly. Here are some suggestions for successful blogging, plus some background for those who aren’t familiar with blogs.
The Backstory on Blogs
The word “blog'’ is derived from the term “web log.'’ In essence, a blog is a web page or site that’s part online journal–hence the term “log'’–and part open forum. Some bloggers post new updates constantly; others write updates weekly, monthly or only occasionally.
In most cases, blog entries are short and might include photos or links. Sometimes blog readers can post their reactions to the blogger’s entries. Other readers can then add their two cents to those comments, thereby continuing the dialogue.
The so-called blogosphere contains blogs on practically every conceivable topic. Some blogs exist on the website of an individual or business, while others are hosted on public blogging sites, like Blogger and Windows Live Spaces.

From Entrepreneur Magazine:
They contact you by phone, fax and e-mail. They’re ready with invoices for you to pay, services for you to order and PO boxes to collect your money. Modern scammers have thought of everything: The only thing that stands between them and your money is keen awareness on your part.
What types of scams are most popular these days? From overpayments that need a refund to inquiries about selling your business, the following “smart” approaches are luring even cautious entrepreneurs.
A “Heavy” Pre-Pay Shipping Scam
“As soon as the TTY operator told me the call was coming from Nigeria, while the woman had me on hold, I knew something was up,” notes Bruce Webber of Webber Floor Covering in Maple Heights, Ohio. Webber had received calls from TTY operators before, working on behalf of the hearing impaired. In this case, it was a call from a woman who wanted to order tile for a church in Alaska. But when she put him on hold for a few moments to try to send him an e-mail, Webber commented to the operator on the lengthy wait.
“I’m not sure if she did it on purpose or just let it slip…typically they don’t tell you where the caller is calling from, but she did” says Webber, who had read in a floor covering industry magazine that such scams were going on. The idea of using a TTY operator is to make the call untraceable and possibly to play on the sympathy of the victim, who believes he or she is helping someone with a hearing disability. When Webber told the operator he didn’t realize the call was from overseas, the caller overheard him and quickly got off the line. She never rang back.

From Bankrate.com:
Whether you are self-employed or an employee, if you use a portion of your home for business, you might be able to deduct the associated costs.
A work at home-office deduction is generally easier for self-employed individuals to claim. But even then, the Internal Revenue Service has certain requirements a taxpayer must meet.
General requirements
First, your home-office area must be used regularly and exclusively for your business needs. You can’t set up a computer in your den, sporadically type invoices and claim that room as your home office.
Secondly, the business part of your home must be either your principal place of business or where you meet or deal with patients, clients or customers in the normal course of your business. A separate, detached structure such as a garage or guesthouse that is used for business also may qualify as a home office.
A few years ago, the IRS broadened the business activities that can be considered in determining whether a home office is a taxpayer’s principal place of business. Now, if a home office is used exclusively and regularly for the administrative or management activities of your business, it also qualifies.
Such things as billing operations, keeping your books and records, ordering supplies or setting up appointments qualify as administrative duties. Be careful here. The IRS cautions that your home location must be the only place where you can fulfill these responsibilities.

From Venturecountystart.com:
Simi Valley will be sending more than 1,800 letters to home businesses that might not be registered with the city, asking them to pay current and up to three years in back taxes.
On Monday night, the City Council voted unanimously to start a compliance program. Letters will start to be mailed next weekend.
If a home business owner does not have what is called a “Business Tax Certificate,” they need to get one, city officials say.
The compliance program is not meant to punish at-home businesses, as many people don’t know the certificate is even needed, said Jim Purtee, director of administrative services.
“One of the council’s directions was to make the letter very friendly,” Purtee said.
State law allows cities to collect the current year business tax, up to three years of back taxes, and up to three years in penalties — equal to the tax.

From Entrepreneur.com:
Sure, it’s kind of a cynical thought, but try and brainstorm a completely new concept, whether for a business, an advertising campaign or even a limerick, and you’ll start to think it’s true. It can sometimes be a stretch to come up with anything that hasn’t already been thought of.
It’s the reason someone once famously said there are only three original jokes and all the others have been derived from them. It’s why Hollywood remakes old movies. And the dearth of original ideas is why businesspeople sometimes pay other businesspeople to come up with a new concept for their own products or services.
Fortunately, if you’re an entrepreneur trying to come up with a new business model, you don’t have to be completely unique. For instance, you probably wouldn’t attempt to sell fingernail clippings in a bag, no matter how groundbreaking and unique the idea is. In fact, if you’re starting a business, you probably shouldn’t do something that’s never been done–after all, think of the learning curve your target market will have to tackle. But you would be well advised to take an old idea and make it new.

From The American Chronicle:
Almost everyone needs or wants more money coming in, and with this desire most would like to start some sort of extra income producing project. The trouble is, not many of these people seem able to fit “a second job” into their time schedules.
It’s true that most people are busy, but extra time for some sort of work at home-based extra income producing project can almost always be found. It may mean giving up or changing a few of your favorite pastimes–such as having a couple of beers with the guys or watching TV–but if you score big with your extra income project, you will have all the time you want for doing whatever you what to do.
Efficient time management boils down to planning what you’re going to do, and then doing it without backtracking. Start by making a list of the things you want to do tomorrow, each evening before you go to bed. Schedule your trips to the store or wherever to coincide with the other things you have to do, and with your trips to or from work. Organize your trips to take care of as many things as possible while you’re out of the house. Take stock of the time you spend on the telephone—and eliminate all that isn’t necessary.

What does it take to be successful in this field? Ambition, personal drive, motivation, desire and perseverance are the forerunners. Without these, all the skills and experience in the world won’t enable you to succeed. However, combine those with your personal skills and experience, and you’ll have what it takes.
Also, take into account the following: Are you ambitious, constantly striving for more fulfillment in life? Are you not fully satisfied until you’ve done your absolute best? Only you can determine what follows that dollar sign on your tax return each year.
Are you a self-starter? You alone are the one who will make this business a success or failure. The amount of time and energy you invest will determine just how successful you are with your business. Are you motivated enough to make things happen? In the beginning stages, a business will require a tremendous amount of hard work and long hours, often without immediate results. You need to be willing to invest that time and await the results with confidence.
Are you creative? Can you think of a new idea and within days make it a reality? What a joy it is to tap that inner imagination and create a new idea for your business. Whether it’s an effective advertising piece or a dazzling brochure for your clients, you have the power to make it work.

News from thenewsherald.com:
The letter begins: “It has come to our attention that you have been conducting a business at your home.”
And in that moment, thousands of individuals each year learn they are just as big as the Big Three when it comes to filing the right state tax forms.
Home-based businesses, one of the few growth sectors of Michigan’s economy, have now come under new scrutiny from cities, townships — and the state — looking to plug budget holes.
Armed with a wide range of formal and informal sources of information, local tax assessors are searching out these small businesses that might have been — unknowingly — violating state tax law.
The result: Unsuspecting sole proprietors — and even telecommuters — may now be filing their first-ever Michigan Personal Property Statement.
A statement that could lead to hundreds of dollars in property taxes being paid to their hometown, their county, their school district and the state.

Excerpt from Entrepreneur.com:
“First impressions count, so give your home business cards some style.
Just as your eyes are the windows to your soul, your business card reveals more about your business than just your contact information. “It’s often someone’s first contact with a brand,” says Michael Schneider, president of Los Angeles based cohesive branding and web development agency Fluidesign. What can a transformation do for your brand? We found three entrepreneurs who went the extra mile and created business cards that truly reflect their businesses.
Kathryn Goetzke White switched her business cards from paper to recyclable plastic for her Annapolis, Maryland, marketing consulting company, Innovative Analysis. When she started a new division of the company in 2004 launching a mood-enhancing product line that includes lights, teas and scents–White decided to use the same recyclable, hard, clear plastic she used for product packaging for the new business’s cards. She succeeded in reinforcing both businesses’ images of creativity. “People feel it, look through it and say it truly is innovative,” says White, 35. White named her new venture Mood-factory and developed another version of the plastic business cards. She projects 2007 sales of about $1.5 million.
