Scott Tjaden doesn’t mind the wind that blows across this part of Northern Iowa for the same reason — it means cash in his pocket.

The reason is the wind turbine Tjaden, his father, Larry, and his uncle, Dean, erected on their farmland here in rural Floyd County.

The idea for harnessing wind power began blowing around the Tjaden household just a few years ago, after the family built a hog-finishing building on its farmland.

The Tjadens considered the two options most pursued by farmers who look at wind energy — either leasing land for very large turbines that are part of larger wind farms owned by energy companies or buying a small 65-kilowatt turbine that would power a livestock building on their property.

If you’re operating a home-based embroidery business or thinking of opening one, you’re not alone. Of course, every advantage has its disadvantage, and working from home is no different. I may have no overhead, but the business takes up some space on my property that I have to work around. I have a flexible schedule, but the work still has to get done. If what I like most is the flexible schedule, what I like least is the feeling that I can never get away from my work. I literally live at work, and it even follows me on vacation.
