Home Based Embroidery Business Success
If you’re operating a home-based embroidery business or thinking of opening one, you’re not alone. The proliferation of home-based embroidery businesses over the years — from 35% when EMB conducted its first industry study in 1995 to 64% in our latest survey (2006 IMPRESSIONS Decorated Apparel Universe Study) — mirrors the growth of home-based businesses in general. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, home-based operations account for 53% of all small businesses.
The reasons behind this attraction are many, the most notable being low overhead — that is, no rent or additional mortgage payments. But there are other advantages as well.
One of my favorite things about working from home is the flexible schedule. I can start whenever I want and end whenever I need to. I don’t have to follow the Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. pattern that everyone else does. Nor do I have to man a facility for set hours as I would if I had a retail space.
Of course, every advantage has its disadvantage, and working from home is no different. I may have no overhead, but the business takes up some space on my property that I have to work around. I have a flexible schedule, but the work still has to get done. If what I like most is the flexible schedule, what I like least is the feeling that I can never get away from my work. I literally live at work, and it even follows me on vacation.
I call this the Southwest Airlines syndrome. The tagline in many of the air carrier’s commercials is “Wanna get away?”……
