I Want a Business Opportunity

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

From Franchising.com:

Business Opportunity!! The words practically leap from the pages–whether in well-known national business publications such as the Wall Street Journal or Entrepreneur magazine, or in the classifieds flooding the back of the smallest daily and weekly newspapers in every city and town in the world. But what exactly is a business opportunity?

Let’s start with what a business opportunity is NOT. In the strictest sense, a business opportunity is not a franchise (though a franchise clearly is a business opportunity!). Nor is it a chance to buy an independent business and call it your own (although this also is a business opportunity).

Confused? Good. Keep reading, all will be revealed. Perhaps the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can help clear things up, at least from a legal perspective. Yes, yes, we know: “We’re from the government and we’re here to help you.” Nevertheless…

In 1979, in an effort to protect potential buyers of business opportunities from being fleeced by unscrupulous companies or individuals, the FTC published the FTC Franchise Rule. In its easy-to-read guide (really!) to the rule, the FTC differentiates between two types of continuing commercial relationships: 1) traditional franchises and 2) business opportunities.

I Want to Work from Home

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

From the American Chronicle:

Anybody who has reached the level of asking this question must be congratulated. For a person to be able to ask the question “how can I work from home?” means that he/she has gone through one, many or even all of the following thoughts and questions:

1) I need to get out of the employment slavery.

2) I am about to retire, what am I going to do with all the free time that I have?

3) I need to find another source of income.

4) What will I do if I lost my job?

5) I want to become financially independent.

6) I want to have my own business.

These are only a few thoughts that would lead a person to decide that the solution to his/her situation is to start a home based business and therefore say “I want to work at home.”

Organization for Your Work at Home Business

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

From The American Chronicle:

Almost everyone needs or wants more money coming in, and with this desire most would like to start some sort of extra income producing project. The trouble is, not many of these people seem able to fit “a second job” into their time schedules.

It’s true that most people are busy, but extra time for some sort of work at home-based extra income producing project can almost always be found. It may mean giving up or changing a few of your favorite pastimes–such as having a couple of beers with the guys or watching TV–but if you score big with your extra income project, you will have all the time you want for doing whatever you what to do.

Efficient time management boils down to planning what you’re going to do, and then doing it without backtracking. Start by making a list of the things you want to do tomorrow, each evening before you go to bed. Schedule your trips to the store or wherever to coincide with the other things you have to do, and with your trips to or from work. Organize your trips to take care of as many things as possible while you’re out of the house. Take stock of the time you spend on the telephone—and eliminate all that isn’t necessary.

The Easiest Home Based Business

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

From The American Chronicle:

There’s an exciting new “down-home” kind of business springing up among homeowners all across the country. It’s called Bed and Breakfast.

Basically, this is a transplant of European Hospitality, adapted and refined to the American way of doing things. To foreign visitors, it’s the comfort and hospitality of home—staying overnight “with people of the land” and enjoying a hearty breakfast—without the traditional gaudiness and plastic feelings visitors get from most big cities in the United States. To U.S. citizens, it is a welcome alternative to the same old hotel/motel circuit.

Now, all it takes is a spare bedroom, a good cook ad an outgoing personality. Prices per night range from a low $25 to $100 or more.

If you have an extra bedroom, a large home, or extra space in your farm house, you have the necessary beginnings to start making extra income as a Bed and Breakfast Inn. One of the beautiful aspects of this idea is that so long as you’re hosting “overnight visitors” on a small scale no licenses will be required. It’s always best, however to check with your local authorities just to be sure.

Choose the Right Franchise Business Opportunity

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

From StartupNation.com:

You’ve decided to launch a franchise home business instead of starting up something from scratch. Congratulations on making this important choice!

Next comes a decision that could prove just as important to your success with a business opportunity: whether to buy a franchise that retails a product, like McDonalds, or provides a service, such as ServiceMaster cleaning franchises.

The two franchise business opportunity paths – product or service – differ dramatically:
Every franchise system has some common denominators, such as a concept owner, a fee structure, a royalty system, and a marketing and administrative program. But the nature and operations of a franchise business differ radically in pushing a product or a service.

“Retail franchises traditionally are opportunities that are driven by having a building, opening the door and waiting for people to walk in, whereas with a service business you’re typically heading out to do the business,” says Lori Kiser-Block, vice president of FranChoice, a Minneapolis-based company that helps entrepreneurs choose a franchise business.

Pros and cons of selling a product as your franchise business:
Most product-oriented franchise businesses sell some sort of food, so operating them is like running a small factory. Your up-front investment in the franchise business, and especially in local real estate for the store, will almost always run into the low six figures. The many day-to-day issues include maintaining proper inventories, ensuring quality, keeping up the grounds, and hiring and managing lower-skilled employees.

Is a Home-Based Business Right for You?

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

What does it take to be successful in this field? Ambition, personal drive, motivation, desire and perseverance are the forerunners. Without these, all the skills and experience in the world won’t enable you to succeed. However, combine those with your personal skills and experience, and you’ll have what it takes.
Also, take into account the following: Are you ambitious, constantly striving for more fulfillment in life? Are you not fully satisfied until you’ve done your absolute best? If so, working from home is for you. There are no limitations. The more you put into the business, the more you’ll get out of it. You control your paycheck. Only you can determine what follows that dollar sign on your tax return each year.

Are you a self-starter? You alone are the one who will make this business a success or failure. The amount of time and energy you invest will determine just how successful you are with your business. Are you motivated enough to make things happen? In the beginning stages, a business will require a tremendous amount of hard work and long hours, often without immediate results. You need to be willing to invest that time and await the results with confidence.

Are you creative? Can you think of a new idea and within days make it a reality? What a joy it is to tap that inner imagination and create a new idea for your business. Whether it’s an effective advertising piece or a dazzling brochure for your clients, you have the power to make it work.

Common Home Business Scams

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

From Entrepreneur.com:

Protect your business by getting familiar with some of the more creative scams entrepreneurs are falling prey to these days.

They contact you by phone, fax and e-mail. They’re ready with invoices for you to pay, services for you to order and PO boxes to collect your money. Modern scammers have thought of everything: The only thing that stands between them and your money is keen awareness on your part.

What types of scams are most popular these days? From overpayments that need a refund to inquiries about selling your business, the following “smart” approaches are luring even cautious entrepreneurs.

A “Heavy” Pre-Pay Shipping Scam
“As soon as the TTY operator told me the call was coming from Nigeria, while the woman had me on hold, I knew something was up,” notes Bruce Webber of Webber Floor Covering in Maple Heights, Ohio. Webber had received calls from TTY operators before, working on behalf of the hearing impaired. In this case, it was a call from a woman who wanted to order tile for a church in Alaska. But when she put him on hold for a few moments to try to send him an e-mail, Webber commented to the operator on the lengthy wait.

“I’m not sure if she did it on purpose or just let it slip…typically they don’t tell you where the caller is calling from, but she did” says Webber, who had read in a floor covering industry magazine that such scams were going on. The idea of using a TTY operator is to make the call untraceable and possibly to play on the sympathy of the victim, who believes he or she is helping someone with a hearing disability. When Webber told the operator he didn’t realize the call was from overseas, the caller overheard him and quickly got off the line. She never rang back.

Home Based Business Personal Tax Scrutiny

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

News from thenewsherald.com:

The letter begins: “It has come to our attention that you have been conducting a business at your home.”

And in that moment, thousands of individuals each year learn they are just as big as the Big Three when it comes to filing the right state tax forms.

Home-based businesses, one of the few growth sectors of Michigan’s economy, have now come under new scrutiny from cities, townships — and the state — looking to plug budget holes.

Armed with a wide range of formal and informal sources of information, local tax assessors are searching out these small businesses that might have been — unknowingly — violating state tax law.

The result: Unsuspecting sole proprietors — and even telecommuters — may now be filing their first-ever Michigan Personal Property Statement.

A statement that could lead to hundreds of dollars in property taxes being paid to their hometown, their county, their school district and the state.

Stay at Home Moms and Home Business

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Press Release:

Edmonton, Canada, February 22, 2007 –(PR.COM)– As more women increasingly start their own businesses, the number of stay at home moms in this industry increases. Including those choosing to trade their business suits for more casual clothing in order to be with their families. And the home business industry is a great indicator that there are stay at home moms looking for business and moms work at home too.

“The most common reasons I hear from women wanting to start a home business are: they want to spend more time with their kids, and they want to keep their mind active. And as much as they love being at home with their families, they also don’t want to get bored,” said Mick Lolekonda, President of the Elite Marketing Group.

So how can these moms still closely attend to their children and also bring home the bacon? An alternative is to start a part-time internet business.

When it comes to work for moms at home, an internet home business offers the possibility for moms to schedule their daily activities around their home business or vice-versa. Which gives them a chance to efficiently attend to their children’s needs or hers. Usually a home business doesn’t require more than 2 hours of their daily attention.

One of the top marketers for GAP, The Pinnacle Group, says the GAP home based business opportunity was recently launched with a simple and very powerful purpose, to attempt to totally eliminate any chance of failure for those involved.

The company’s co-founders Mike Churchill & Tod Bell have extensive experience with online business opportunities. And while Mike and Tod knew they had the skills necessary to succeed, they also knew that the vast majority of others did not.

Most importantly, through working with many such individuals, Mike and Tod were able to isolate the 3 most important elements causing home business failure:

1. Lack of sufficient, qualified prospects;
2. Inability to deliver professional, effective product and opportunity presentations;
3. Closing the sale.

Women’s Guide to Starting a Home Business

From WomenHomeBusiness.com:

Work or Stay at Home Dilemma

Monday, February 19th, 2007

News from NWAOnline.com:

Since the early 1970s, parents have agonized over the question: Do I stay home and parent my children, or do I provide a second income and put them in the care of someone else (day care, relative, nanny, etc.)? As you can imagine, there are many variables to consider. Financial planners are quick to point out that a second income of $30,000 or less might result in a minimum net income — perhaps as low as 30 percent, after factoring in taxes, day care, commuting expenses, work clothes and other work-related items. In addition, the second income could bump a couple up to the next-higher tax bracket.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 5.8 million “stay-at-home” parents: 5.6 million moms and 143,000 dads. Although these numbers seem impressive, the majority of parents work. Sixty percent of children under the age of 6 have parents who both work.

For many parents, there is little or no choice about being a two-paycheck family. They must work just to survive. Other parents have the luxury of a choice, but it usually involves a sacrifice of one thing for another. A comment made to me more than a decade ago by a stay-at-home mom made my wife and me reflect on our own choices. She said, “We have few possessions compared to our neighbors, but we are able to give our children the nurturing that they need.”

Thanks to the parents who e-mailed or left a voice mail of their favorite parenting tip this week.

Get A Job Or Stay At Home

Before I made the decision of whether to continue being a stay-at-home mom or to get a job, I did some serious thinking. First, I made a detailed list of pros and cons for each option. I also calculated what a particular job would pay, and then deducted the cost of child care, a work wardrobe, transportation, taxes and other work-related expenses. Working these issues out on paper helped me to make the right choice. — S.S.W., Seattle

What Every Work at Home Office Needs

Monday, February 19th, 2007

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people who work at home has grown again substantially over the last decade. Approximately 4.2 million people are now doing it.

Whether you run your own work at home business, telecommute or are an independent contractor, working from home has a number of advantages. Among them, having more flexibility, saving time and money by eliminating the commute, avoiding noise and distraction in the workplace and being able to arrange work around family commitments.

If you’ve made the decision to give it a try, there are a few things to take note of up front: you’ll need to start paying your own employment taxes; keep track of every work-related expense, no matter how big or small; and you’ll need to invest in a few high-ticket tools to get started.

Computer
No office can function in this day and age without a computer. There are dozens of models to choose from, but perhaps the most convenient would be a laptop which can be brought to meetings when necessary.

Start a Small Business from Home

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Excerpt from Rockford Register Start:

Question: I would like to start my own small business from home. What’s a good idea for such a business?

Answer: As you have stated your question, that can be a tough question and in any case we really need more information. Such as, first we should establish the “Why” of your purpose in wanting that business. It might be a part-time business, and those part-timers can be the “hobby” type or maybe just a supplemental income type. Maybe you are unhappy with your job and think this will be a good way out of that situation. Or maybe it’s full-time and for all the marbles, that’s is, to make your living expenses. So what’s your purpose? Why do you want to own a business? Is there timing a factor? And such initial questions can go on and on.

The most important things to consider include your experiences, any special education or specializing courses, all your business experiences, maybe your hobby (s), your interests, perhaps available mentors, and maybe last but not least your passion. Sometimes in business, all that carries you through to the next plateau is persistence and passion.

Some people have personalities that are more suited to a particular home business. For instance, some people fail at the selling part because of the difficulty in handling and accepting rejection. Some fail at the ability to cope with the variety and moods of their customers. Financial controls are difficult for others. So how does your personality fit with the foils of business? Not how would you like to have them fit but how will they fit?

eBay Home Business Listings

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Article excerpt from Entrepreneur.com:
Attracting customers online isn’t so different from attracting customers to a retail store. Here’s a real-world example. Last week, I went to a mall to find a pair of jeans. Jeans used to be a simple purchase, but today they come in so many shapes, styles and sizes, it’s hard to keep track of them all. There was no one to help me through the maze of options in the store I first walked into, so I left empty-handed and went to another. There, I was immediately approached by a very helpful salesperson who explained all the varieties of jeans to me, and I bought a fancy pair of jeans at that store–at retail price! (Now that I know my size and style, I can buy them for half-price on eBay.) But which store do you think I would return to when styles change?

Expanding my jeans shopping experience to eBay, the lesson is, any item sold on eBay deserves more than a title, a picture and a one-line description. How many times have you found an item through a keyword search just to click on it and find no further information? Plenty. It happens to thousands of prospective buyers every day. As a seller, if you’re going to invest the money to list an item, give it a fighting chance for a successful sale.

An item’s description tells the customer what to expect about their possible purchase. Mention size, manufacturer, material, condition–basically, anything and everything to give the buyer more information about the item. Lucky media sellers get the advantage of eBay’s license of the Muze database, which supplies further details on books, movies, games and music. But believe it or not, some sellers don’t even take the time to click their mouse to include it in their listings–all you’ll see in their descriptions is “New and sealed.” Wow. What you should do is tell the customer what they’ll get and what to expect. Then take some time to sell yourself–tell them why they should buy from you.

Starting a Home Business with Kids

Friday, February 16th, 2007

From Entrepreneur.com:
More work at home moms are redirecting their creativity, experience and education into starting home businesses on the side. Whether your goals are as simple as supplementing the family’s income or as lofty as building a company that could eventually be worth millions, starting part-time is a great way to test the business waters.

But between helping the kids with complex homework assignments, shuttling them to countless activities and volunteering at their school–all while managing the household and trying to carve out a little time for yourself–where do you find the time to start a home business?

First, “prepare a thorough business plan,” says Jennifer Bluemle, who built Buffalo, New York-based J.W. Daigler Co., which offers custom-designed notecards, invitations and birth announcements, all while raising Finn, 3. A business plan will help keep you on track so you use your limited time wisely, and it also provides a blueprint for taking the business full-time should you decide to do so later. Gather information on market trends, demographics and similar businesses, and use this information to write your plan. Plenty of books and resources can guide you through the process; one helpful source is www.onepagebusinessplan.com.

Before launching a part-time home business, be sure you have the support of your spouse and family. Now–not three months into startup–is the time to bring any of their concerns into the open. Work with your spouse to come up with solutions to possible problems (could you divide up some of your household chores, for example?). Lay some ground rules–for instance, no working on Sundays or discussing business at the dinner table…..Read Full Article Here

Tips for Home Based Entrepreneurs

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Excerpt from StartUpNation.com:

Before Becky Boyd turned her basement into an office for her public relations business, MediaFirst PR, she fell prey to the “just let me check another e-mail” syndrome that ails many home-based entrepreneurs.

“We had a computer in our living room, and it was so easy to run in there and go online and start doing e-mail,” says Boyd, who works with her husband, Jim Caruso.

After founding the company in 1992, the pair worked offsite. But they moved home because, well, they liked being there. It was easy, convenient, required no commute and – a big plus – their young son wouldn’t have to sit in after-school daycare.

They built out the basement of their 4,000-square-foot, three-story house, creating two offices and a computer closet. Every day, Boyd dresses for work like she would for an offsite office. She sets hours, too, which is imperative for home-preneurs who can get swept away by the compelling forces of working where you live.

“It’s very hard to leave work at work because work is always available,” says Boyd, who has to fight the urge to work 16-hour days and fill weekends with earning income. “It’s not like I have to drive anywhere, fight traffic. I just go boom, and I’m in the office. You have to make a concerted effort to get away from it.”

Legitimate Telecommuting Work at Home Jobs

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Everyone, it seems, wants to work from home these days, but it can be difficult to find legitimate telecommuter jobs. Some of the jobs you can find online pay poorly or don’t offer the benefits they claim. Unfortunately, this is because a few unscrupulous companies are taking advantage of all the people who need to work online. They’ve found that many of them will work for less if there are no other opportunities available.

Did you know, though, that there are lots of legitimate telecommuter jobs on the Internet ripe for the picking? All you need is knowledge of how to find them. They’re often not on the regular job boards at all. One of the reasons you won’t find them on a regular job board is that they’re actually classified as moneymaking opportunities not jobs, so they don’t make it onto a job board as such.

Finding Legitimate Telecommuter Jobs
These opportunities are always there. You can pick them up or put them down as you please. In effect, it’s like having a whole private source of legitimate jobs at your fingertips, for you to make use of whenever you feel like it. It is possible though, to find yourself a moneymaking opportunity to conduct from home that you will be so happy with you don’t want to do anything else.

Some legitimate telecommuter jobs involve filling out online surveys or driving cars. Or you can opt for setting up online auctions or ad campaigns. These last are examples of possible online businesses that could become a permanent source of income for you. Making use of recent internet technology to launch pay-per-click campaigns, for example, can be a great idea for a business that is cheap and quick to launch, but that has a lot of income potential.

If you don’t want the commitment of a business though, there are mystery shopper jobs in all sorts of industries, like travel and eating out, in addition to the regular shopping. If this sounds good to you then you need to sign up with an online agency that will supply you as many mystery shopping opportunities as you can handle.

Get Beyond Your Home Business Launch

Monday, February 12th, 2007

From Entrepreneur.com:

11 tips to act on now that’ll help you keep your work at home business going well beyond the startup phase.

If starting a business were easy, everyone would do it. But they don’t. Only those of you who know deep down inside you’re entrepreneurs at heart will ever take these steps–even if you’ve denied that entrepreneurial spirit burning inside you for a long time.

Using that burning desire to grow your business, however, is a far different task from simply lighting it. Most people start with the odds stacked so much against them that it’s difficult for them to fan the fire beyond the first few months or years. Here are a few pieces of advice I can offer to help you keep your new business growing in size and profit:

1. Hire people who are better at the job than you are. It’s a fact that companies are built by people, and the best people build the best and most profitable companies. Put simply, great employees may cost you 20 to 30 percent more in wages, but they can be twice as productive as mediocre employees. Invest in good people.

2. Place high urgency in everything you do. Always do everything you can today. When I started each of my businesses, I’d work constantly until I just had to go eat and sleep. Too many people treat their businesses as nine-to-five jobs. Never put something off until tomorrow if you can do it right now.

3. Get customers coming back. The road to profitability is through repeat business. Too few business owners set themselves up for long-term success. Your business grows when you add regular new customers on top of existing regular customers. Think of it this way: What if every customer you ever got stayed for life? How many regular buyers would you have?

4. Make decisions quickly. New companies don’t have the time or resources to stand still. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf once said to me, “When placed in command, take charge.” He also believes it’s better to make a decision and move than it is to stand still.

5. Deliver more than you promise. If you tell a customer it’ll be three days, deliver in two. If you think it’ll be two hours, say three hours and surprise them. This is the best form of marketing ever.

eBay Home Business Idea

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Article excerpt from Entrepreneur.com:

“Computers and computer accessories are some of the best-selling and most reliably profitable items on eBay. Thousands of people visit eBay every day to browse and shop for new PCs, printers, networking components, cables, monitors and many other computer-related items. Many savvy eBay sellers have already recognized and capitalized on eBay’s large and hungry market for everything computer related. With some research, foresight and careful planning, you can join their ranks.

Though selling on eBay is a great way to earn money, it is not a get-rich-quick miracle. Care must be taken when conducting all your transactions and dealing with bidders. eBay’s feedback system is a double-edged sword. It will, at once, boast to the world how great a seller you are, while revealing to the world exactly where you are lagging behind. It takes a lot of work to make and keep buyers happy. If you’ve ever had a job that deals directly with the public, then you know this already. If you do not have the time or interest to devote to taking care of the details of doing business, such as getting packages to the shipping store on time in the middle of a snowstorm, or answering buyer e-mails after a long day of crunching numbers in your cubicle, then selling on eBay is not for you. Your feedback score will suffer, and soon buyers will shy away from your listings. However, if you’re ready and excited for the possibilities eBay presents, then you will have a rewarding and profitable experience.

PowerSelling vs. Selling as a Hobby
The first step in selling on eBay is to decide your commitment level to this endeavor. There are two levels of commitment when discussing selling on eBay: hobby seller and PowerSeller. The hobby seller sells casually for extra cash when she finds time in her schedule. The PowerSeller has made selling online her career. The tips found in How to Sell Computers and Accessories on eBay will help both the hobby seller and PowerSeller become more successful, but the initial planning for these two commitment levels is decidedly different. The differences are discussed throughout the book, but for now just think carefully about whether you want to depend on selling computers on eBay as your only income, or if you’d like for it to supplement what you’re already earning elsewhere.
