As Home Based Businesses grow…

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

…., moms find their creative niche!

“WHEN Donna Maria Coles Johnson left her job as an attorney at a reputable law firm, it was to start a family, a decision she was convinced that corporate America wouldn’t fully support.

Work at Home MomsIn January 2000 she began the Handmade Beauty Network, which offers a wide range of services, including products liability insurance, logo design and legal options to small businesses. Two years later (and a few months after the birth of her first child), Johnson, who once charged $400 per hour, was operating her business from her home office in suburban Washington, D.C. “I trademarked the term ‘lifestyle CEO’ to describe people who start businesses, not solely for financial gain, but also to enjoy the personal rewards of entrepreneurship, independence, flexibility and fun,” says Johnson, 42. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Darryl, and they have two children, daughter Vanessa, 3, and son Brooks, 18 months.

In 2003, Johnson was named Home-Based Business Advocate of the Year by the Small Business Administration in the Washington, D.C., region. She is just one of a growing number of women who are leaving lucrative careers in order to start home-based businesses. The Center for Women’s Business Research in Washington, D.C., reported that as of 2004 an estimated 414,472 majority-owned, privately held U.S. firms are owned by African-American women, and such companies employ 254,000 people and generate $19.5 billion in sales.”

Home Business Tax Red Flag Write-Offs

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Entrepreneur.com

“From guard dogs to Las Vegas-style showgirl costumes, there’s no limit to what people will try to write off at tax time for the sake of their business. But where do you draw the line? Which write-offs you’re trying to write off go too far?

We assembled a team of three leading tax attorneys to get their advice on how far is too far in the land of tax write-offs. Our team of experts include Cliff Ennico, a Connecticut-based business attorney who specializes in advising small businesses and entrepreneurs; Donna LeValley, a tax attorney and contributing editor to the J.K. Lasser annual tax guide; and Alvin S. Brown, a tax attorney who formerly worked with the office of the chief counsel of the IRS for more than 25 years.

Tax Write-Off: Home Office
Home office deductions used to be a big red flag for an audit back in the 1990s. These days, you just need to use the deduction with caution. A basic rule of thumb to follow? “Anything that’s unusual and disproportionate to your level of income is something the IRS will check out,” Alvin Brown says.

So how do you determine your actual home office space? This is the area in your home dedicated solely to the running of your business. Once you figure out the percentage of your home office compared to your overall home, then you can go back to your heating bills, electric bills and all other bills that go to supporting your home, and figure out the amount you can deduct for running your business.”

3 Essentials for Home Based Business Success

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

“The three greatest essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.” … Thomas Edison

Home Business MotivationThomas Edison is a prime example of a man who achieved by following the three greatest essentials of hard work, stick-to-itiveness, and common sense. In thinking about the three essentials to achievement that Thomas Edison mentions, I believe it is much like a three legged stool. You need all three legs of the stool to keep the stool standing.

A question often popping in our minds as we strive to succeed in our home based businesses, is, “why do others succeed and we seem to struggle?” Fortunately, you don’t have to ask that question any more!

You and I were made to achieve. We were born with a natural desire to achieve and succeed. We have the power within us to unleash this desire into a burning desire to achieve and succeed in all that we do. Realize, this power we have internally has not have been given to us to just let the power sit idle. Nor were we given this unique personal power of achievement without also being given the ability and opportunity to realize it.

You must first know your strengths and weaknesses before you can be a real achiever. Take some time to think about your home based business and what you want your business to be. Once your strengths and weaknesses are identified, you can begin working toward your goals and dreams.

Keep a firm understanding of the difference between achievement and success. Yes, there is a difference between achievement and success. Achievement is the knowledge you have studied, applied, and result in moving you forward in all you do. Success is being praised by others.

The key is to aim for achievement and success will follow. Break your plan into small stepping stones of achievement. Seeking steady progress like this will ultimately add up to Long term achievement and ultimately a successful home based business.

Recipe for Home Business Success

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Home Business Leaders
“Recipe for success. Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing, prepare while others are playing, and dream while others are wishing.” - William A. Ward

What this means to me is that home business success does not come easily. It comes through sacrifice. It means giving up present pleasures for future benefits. Every time I do not give time to my business and get lazy I am actually robbing myself of a successful future. It is said that people are motivated by either plain or pleasure. So what motivates you- pain or pleasure? What motivates me is the pain of the likelihood of having a future of financial struggles. I do not want to have those struggles so I am willing to put in the time to create a future of financial security. The problem then becomes developing a sustainable motivation that will drive you towards disciplined action. Andre considers internal motivation to be like a muscle. Are you exercising that muscle every day so that you get into the daily discipline of action? My struggle has not been so much getting into action but more so devoting ample time towards study. The quote above has motivated me to get into my training at a more consistent level…especially the part “study while others are sleeping”.

5 Home Design Businesses to Start

There’s a good reason why cable TV networks like HGTV, The Learning Channel and DIY Network have such a huge following from coast to coast: The home design and improvement industry is hot, hot, hot and is showing no signs of cooling off. There may be no better time than the present to tool up your skills and fire up your enthusiasm for a career in this creative and fulfilling field.

But while Americans are keenly interested in home improvement and home design and have made household names out of “Extreme Makeover: Home Editions” Ty Pennington, professional organizer Peter Walsh from “Clean Sweep” and other home design show hosts, the fact is many don’t have the time, talent or inclination to undertake such projects themselves. Or they enthusiastically take up a paintbrush, rearrange the furniture or make a stab at organizing their lives, then toss up their hands in defeat when they realize it’s not as easy as it looks.

All this means there are plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurs like you to start what we are broadly calling a home design business. In our startup guide Home Design Services, we’ve outlined the information you need to start five different home design services: interior design, interior redesign, professional organizing, building preservation/restoration, and faux painting. Here’s a closer look at each of those businesses so you can get feel for the opportunities available in this industry, and what will fit your personality and creativity the best.

How to Keep Your Home Business Running Smoothly

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

“Leaving corporate America to run a homebased business is the ideal situation for many people: There’s no boss breathing down your neck, no boring meetings to attend and no 45-minute drives Home Based Business Ideasin rush hour traffic. Working from home can be a rewarding experience, but it’s easy to forget the basic rules of running a successful business when it’s 10 hours of just you, your computer and the distractions of home.

To help you stay on track, we’ve contacted homebased business expert Rosalind Resnick, CEO of Axxess Business Centers Inc., a New York small-business consulting firm. Resnick is a former business journalist who has regularly contributed her expertise to Entrepreneur.com. She’s put together eight helpful tips for keeping your homebased business running smoothly.

Structure your day. The problem a lot of homebased business owners have is that they no longer have a boss standing over them making sure they get their work done, or a tangible start and end of each workday. It’s easy to let time slip by as you head to the refrigerator, catch a few minutes of TV, or dive into a project first thing in the morning, neglecting the other tasks you need to perform to keep your business running smoothly.

Create a structure that mimics what you had in the workplace. Structure your day so you have a start and finish time, with certain hours set aside for specific activities. A general rule is to spend the first hour of the day prospecting for new clients. Send your emails, write your letters and make your phone calls first thing so you don’t forget to do it later.

Use Outlook or some sort of contact management software to serve as a visual reminder of what you need to accomplish that day. Live and die by your to-do-list. Try to have everything crossed off by the end of the day. Even my own children know that if they want me to do something for them during working hours, they have to put it on my to-do-list or it will never get done. ”

Most Home Businesses Start with No Capital

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Inc.com
Half of U.S. businesses are home-based and almost two-thirds are self-financed, according to a pair of new Census Bureau reports.

Bizopp Opportunity
Nearly 2.5 million firms were interviewed for the two reports, which were released Wednesday as part of the bureau’s ongoing 2002 Survey of Business Owners.

Home-based businesses collectively generated a remarkable amount of economic activity, especially for women and minorities, Louis Kincannon, the Census Bureau’s director, said in a statement.

The survey found that 49 percent of the nation’s businesses were home-based. Fifty-six percent of both women- and American Indian-owned firms were home-based, compared to 33 percent of Asian-owned businesses.

Companies in certain industries were more frequently run from home, with professional, scientific, and technical services, construction, and retail companies topping the list.

In addition, “most businesses are started by people and families who dig into their own pockets,” Kincannon said.

Seventy-seven percent of companies with paid employees were started by entrepreneurs who used their own assets, or those of their families. The figures were slightly lower for companies with no paid employees, at 59 percent…. Read Full Article from Inc.

Home Business Startup Phase

Paying Yourself During the Startup Phase from Entrepreneur.com

During the home business startup phase, it shouldn’t be surprising to find yourself asking, “Where’s my money?” over and over again. That’s because salary–or a lack thereof–is one of the main frustrations small-business owners experience during startup. You’re most likely working harder than you’ve ever worked, but I bet you feel you’re not really receiving adequate monetary compensation in return. Welcome to the world of entrepreneurship!

Make Money Working at HomeWhen it comes to paying yourself a salary, you’ve got to remember an important point: You’re in this for the long haul, and your rewards and compensation will come once you’ve got your business established. You’ve got to be patient, because paying yourself too much too soon is a sure recipe for disaster.

Every business consultant and accountant will tell you that your compensation needs to be a secondary consideration during the startup of your business. Focusing only on how much you’re going to pay yourself will detract from the overall purpose of the business and could drain the company of necessary cash resources during critical growth phases.

Of course, that’s not to say you don’t deserve compensation–you just need to be realistic that it may take awhile before your business can provide it to you. That’s one reason entrepreneurs are often advised to start a home business part time while maintaining their current “job” so there are other sources of income to help carry you through the startup phase. When it comes to compensation, having patience will allow your company to grow to the point where it can support a reasonable compensation package for you.

There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when determining when and how much you can expect your business to compensate you during the startup phase….[Read Full Article]

Finding Legitimate Work at Home Jobs

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Find Legitimate Work at Home Jobs

Legitimate work at home jobs can easily be found, if you know where to look. However, it is unfortunately true that there are also many work at home scams and dubious schemes which should be avoided at all costs. But how do you know which is which?

Common sense will usually tell you. Legitimate work at home jobs generally pay a fair rate for a fair day’s business. If you find that you are being offered exceptionally high rates for fairly ordinary jobs, the alarm bells should start ringing. Most scams are concentrated on unskilled projects, such as typing ads or stuffing envelopes. This is because the con artists can reach the largest audience this way - everyone wants easy money. But if the business is so easy to do, and there are millions of people willing to do it, why would anyone pay you high rates?

Some jobs, however, are harder to judge. For example admin projects or medical transcription jobs may well be genuine. On the other hand, these are still targets for various scams. So to find scam-free jobs, you need to take care. Read the advert for the job carefully. If it sounds like an advert, rather than a job posting, take care. Someone who is genuinely looking to employ people will not need to ’sell’ the job. Here are some of the most common home business scams:

  • answering email
  • typing ads
  • envelope stuffing
  • assembling toys
  • mailing orders

However, you should not be discouraged. There are plenty of perfectly sound jobs which can be done from your own home. You just need to take a little extra care in finding and selecting them. At the end of the day, it all boils down to using your grey matter. If a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Use sites like Freelance Work Exchange to find jobs that are genuine, and which can earn you a fair and reasonable income.

Where are the Real Work at Home Jobs?

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Real Work at Home Jobs
“Are there real work at home jobs? Yes there are some, but, they are not nearly as plentiful as you would think considering the amount of interest there is in working from home. They are also difficult to find. Job seekers who are interested in home employment need to spend a good deal of time searching for legitimate opportunities, as well as a significant amount of time weeding through scams.
Getting Started Working at Home

Many people who work from home started out working in an office, but, were able to arrange with their employer to work some or all of time at home. I have an acquaintance who relocated to Washington, DC. Her employer decided to enable her to work from home, rather than losing a valuable employee. I have another acquaintance who works part-time from the office and part-time from home in order to accommodate her children’s school schedules.

My sister-in-law schedules home nursing care visits from home. In those cases, employees, who had already proven themselves to be valuable to their employer, were able to negotiate flexible work schedules…[Read full article from About.com]

Big Ideas from Small Businesses in 2007

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

(FSB Magazine) — When a new product from Microsoft debuts, it doesn’t arrive quietly. Instead it gets tracked through the R&D pipeline by trade magazines, bloggers and carefully controlled announcements from the marketing department.

Fortune Small BusinessSmall-business innovations don’t work that way. They tiptoe into the market, heralded by minimal PR (if any) and propelled instead by the inventor’s enthusiasm.

What makes that more ironic is that small businesses these days come up with better ideas more consistently than their corporate competitors. “Rates of R&D growth among small firms tend to have been higher than among large R&D-performing firms,” says John Jankowski, director of the R&D Statistics Program at the National Science Foundation.

To find these innovative companies you need a field guide, and that’s were FSB comes in. Exploring everything from ocean-generated electricity to six-foot roses to an ATM for books, the stories on the following pages offer a preview of the companies, products, people, trends and ideas likely to make news in 2007 - all from the world of small business.

Gas Tax May Help Home Business

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Falling fuel prices may seem like good news for entrepreneurs. But a properly designed gas tax could be even better.

(FSB Magazine) — Like many entrepreneurs, Tedd Saunders finds most taxes annoying. He co-owns seven East Coast hotels, including the Lenox in Boston, and would love to see the estate tax gutted. He also rankles at a hotel room tax levied by lawmakers in his home state, dubbed “Taxachusetts.”

Gas Tax Helps Home BusinessYet Saunders supports a higher tax on gasoline - even though it would raise costs for his employees who commute to work by car and might boost prices charged by his suppliers.

Says the hotelier: “We need to make tough choices to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and to recognize this looming crisis of climate change and what it will do to our lives and our businesses.”

As FSB went to press, the cost of gas had plummeted 26 percent since July, to a national average of $2.21 a gallon. In the past that would have been considered good news, but the reaction today is decidedly mixed. In a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 59 percent of respondents nationwide said they would support a gas tax if it would result in less fuel consumption and less global warming.

Think about how many business opportunities you have each day to go the extra mile. You’ll find that there are dozens. “Going the extra mile” simply means doing something better than you have to, or going above and beyond what is expected of you in any given situation.

When you meet someone new, how you relate to them is a choice. You can do what is expected of a normal person, which is to introduce yourself and maybe force a smile. Or, you can go the extra mile. You can flash a big smile, pay the person a sincere complement and let them know that you are genuinely pleased to have met them. You can take interest in really getting to know them. Perhaps using your intuition, you can say or do something for this person that would brighten their day….[Read Full Article: Home Business Success - Going the Extra Mile]

Home Businesses
Hot Home Based Business Ideas for 2007 from Entrepreneur.com

There are thousands of home based businesses to choose from when you decide to start your own. How do you know which ones will be the most profitable in the years to come? To help you get started, here are five up and coming businesses to consider for 2006 that have the potential to be the next home based trend.

Alternative Energy Installing
If you’re troubled by the rising costs of heating and lighting your home, you’re like millions of other households that may be feeling the pain of high energy bills. The result is that lots of people are seeking alternatives. They want to get “off the grid.” In other words, be independent of utilities that use electricity, water, gas or propane. Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and wireless are among the technologies that are enabling increasing numbers of people to live independent of pipes and wires and rising utility payments.

Collection Agency
Difficult economic developments such as rising energy and health-care bills, record debt loads, the doubling of minimum payments on credit-card debt, and a $5-billion cut in child-support enforcement funds mean more business for collection agencies. These agencies collect bills, debts and non-sufficient funds (NSF) checks for businesses as well as for individuals.

Home-Theatre Consulting
We tried watching the same broadcast of the Rose Parade on both the Discovery high-density channel and on a local television station. No wonder HDTV’s are selling so well! Unfortunately, getting an HDTV calibrated isn’t as easy as plugging in a new TV or even installing a new computer. This is particularly so if you want your HDTV to mesh with other video and audio components. A lot of expertise is required.

Massage Therapy
From time to time, most people enjoy a massage. But for people with injuries or boomers with aging bodies, getting a massage approaches being a necessity since some people use massage as an alternative to more costly physical therapy.

Web Design
Who, today, thinks about starting a business without having a website? What business can keep a website without updating and changing it?

Real Work at Home Data Entry Jobs

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

With so many businesses stretched to the limit meeting deadlines, dealing with clients and getting through the day-to-day work load, more and more companies are finding it impossible to complete ongoing, data entry jobs. Indeed too often full-time staffers are tearing their hair-out because they don’t get the time to get through the backlog of administrative and secretarial work. Typically it is the time consuming work (such as the ever-present data entry job!) that gets left to the absolute last. Instead of sitting and watching while these data entry jobs pile up until they reach insurmountable levels, managers and recruiters regularly call on outside people to help clear the decks.

Data Entry Typing Opportunity
If you are a quick and accurate typist, taking on a data entry job as a freelance operator can be a very easy way of finding employment and making some extra cash. Data entry jobs are simple to perform, and generally only require basic computer skills, an attention to detail and patience. Indeed finding employment through online data entry jobs allows you to work from home and gives you invaluable flexibility to juggle work with your family and other commitments.

Indeed many stay-at-home mothers and students are taking online data entry jobs to supplement their incomes whilst having the convenience and freedom of working from home. The beauty of employment in a data entry job is that there is no need to retrain or learn new information. Providing you are a fast typist with an eye for accuracy, anyone can do it.

Whether you need a regular income or some extra cash, an online data entry job or on-site data entry job is the perfect way of money. Moreover being freelance gives you flexibility and the freedom to decline jobs if you are overextended or busy with other things. Finding a freelance data entry job – be it an online data entry job or otherwise – is simple when you join the Freelance Work Exchange. The Freelance Work Exchange is the premier place to both look for data entry jobs or post your details and data entry job request.
