How to Start a Small Business

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Starting and managing a business takes motivation, desire and talent. It also takes research and planning.

Like a chess game, success in small business starts with decisive and correct opening moves. And, although initial mistakes are not fatal, it takes skill, discipline and hard work to regain the advantage.

To increase your chance for success, take the time up front to explore and evaluate your business and personal goals. Then use this information to build a comprehensive and wellthoughtout business plan that will help you reach these goals.

The process of developing a business plan will help you think through some important issues that you may not have considered yet. Your plan will become a valuable tool as you set out to raise money for your business. It should also provide milestones to gauge your success.

Before starting out, list your reasons for wanting to go into business. Some of the most common reasons for starting a business are:

* You want to be your own boss.

* You want financial independence.

* You want creative freedom.

* You want to fully use your skills and knowledge.

Next you need to determine what home business is “right for you.” Ask yourself these questions: [Go to SBA.gov]

Find Your Home Business Niche

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

A market in its entirety is too broad in scope for any but the largest companies to tackle successfully. The best strategy for a home business is to divide demand into manageable market niches. Small operations can then offer specialized goods and services attractive to a specific group of prospective buyers.

There are undoubtedly some particular products or services you are especially suited to provide. Study the market carefully and you will find legitimate opportunities. As an example, surgical instruments used to be sold in bulk to both small medical practices and large hospitals. One firm realized that the smaller practices could not afford to sterilize instruments after each use like hospitals did, but instead simply disposed of them. The firm’s sales representatives talked to surgeons and hospital workers to learn what would be more suitable for them. Based on this information, the company developed disposable instruments which could be sold in larger quantities at a lower cost. Another firm capitalized on the fact that hospital operating rooms must carefully count the instruments used before and after surgery. This firm met that particular need by packaging their instruments in pre-counted, customized sets for different forms of surgery.

While researching your own company’s niche, consider the results of your market survey and the areas in which your competitors are already firmly situated. Put this information into a table or a graph to illustrate where an opening might exist for your product or service. Try to find the right configuration of products, services, quality, and price that will ensure the least direct competition. Unfortunately, there is no universally effective way to make these comparisons. Not only will the desired attributes vary from industry to industry, but there is also an imaginative element that cannot be formalized. For example, only someone who had already thought of developing pre-packaged surgical instruments could use a survey to determine whether or not a market actually existed for them.

Haunted Small Businesses

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Objects moving by themselves, disembodied voices, ghostly apparitions — who you gonna call? Forget the ‘Ghostbusters.’ We called a paranormal investigator and a marketing expert to find out how these haunted small businesses can put their ghosts to work.

Just one look at new network TV shows of the past few years, and it should come as no surprise that all things paranormal are haunting our collective unconscious. From cable reality shows that follow real life ghost-hunters to the fictional mediums, night stalkers, and ghost whisperers that haunt the big three broadcast networks, all things otherworldly have seen their stock rise.

Ghosts? Give Me a Break!
While there are no easily obtainable statistics on the number of “authentically” haunted businesses out there, a quick online search will put you in touch with hundreds of businesses – mostly “destination businesses” like hotels and bed & breakfasts — that claim to have a haunted history, and use this fact front-and-center in their marketing. One well known example is the RMS Queen Mary, the fabled Art Deco era liner permanently docked as a hotel in Long Beach, CA. Her several on-board ghost tours are a year-round draw.

Is Starting a Work at Home Business For You?

Monday, October 30th, 2006

From SBA.gov

There is no way to eliminate all the risks associated with starting a small business. However, you can improve your chances of success with good planning and preparation. A good starting place is to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses as the owner and manager of a small business. Carefully consider each of the following questions.

Are you a selfstarter?

How well do you get along with different personalities?

How good are you at making decisions?

Do you have the physical and emotional stamina to run a small home business?

How well do you plan and organize?

Is your drive strong enough to maintain your motivation?

How will the work at home business affect your family?

It’s true, there are a lot of reasons not to start your own business. But for the right person, the advantages of business ownership far outweigh the risks. You get to be your own boss.

* Hard work and long hours directly benefit you, rather than increasing profits for someone.

* Earning and growth potential are far less limited.

* A new work at home business venture is exciting.

* Running a home business will provide endless variety, challenge and opportunities to learn.

Tips for New Home Businesses

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Save up as much money as possible before starting.
All too often, people go into business without any savings, exclusively using loan money from friends, banks, or the SBA. They except to be able to start paying the loans back right away with their profits. What these business owners don’t realize is that it can take months or years to make a profit. And once a lender discovers a business isn’t as profitable as expected, the lender is likely to call in the loan or refuse to renew it for another year. Often new business owners then have to take out home equity loans or use credit cards to pay off their loans (which puts their home and credit rating at risk). For more information, see Business Financing FAQ.

A better plan is to save up as much of the needed investment money as possible, including your living expenses for the first year, or even two. Odds are that your business won’t be profitable for one to two years. Even if you get plenty of business coming your way — and your customers pay you on time, which isn’t always a sure thing — you’ll want to be able to invest most of that money back in the business for space, equipment, advertising, and insurance needs.

Start on a shoestring.
Think small. Don’t rent premises if you can work somewhere else, and don’t hire employees until you can keep them busy. (You can hire independent contractors or temps in the meantime.)
People who start their small business on the cheap, often in a garage, den, or some other scavenged space, and create their first goods or services with more sweat than cash, have the luxury of making their inevitable rookie mistakes on a small scale. And precisely because their early screw-ups don’t bury them in debt, they are usually able to learn and recover from them.

Understand how — and if — you will make a profit.
You should be able to state in just a few sentences how your business plans to make a substantial profit. For starters, you need to know your costs: how much you’ll spend purchasing inventory, paying the rent, compensating any employees, and covering what is likely to be a surprisingly long list of other costs. Then you can figure out exactly how much you need to sell each month, for how many dollars, to cover those expenses and have an adequate profit besides. These numbers are all you need to create a “break-even analysis.”

Advertise Your Home Business on Craigslist

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Craigslist is a centralized network of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements (with jobs, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community, gigs and resumes categories) and forums sorted by various topics. You can also advertise your work at home business opportunity, but only in the Small Biz ad category.

It was founded in 1995 by Craig Newmark for the San Francisco Bay Area. After incorporation in 1999, Craigslist expanded into nine more cities in 2000 (all of them in the U.S.), four each in 2001 and 2002, and 14 in 2003. As of June 2006, Craigslist had established itself in approximately 310 cities all over the world.

As of 2006, Craigslist operates with a staff of 22 people. [1] Its sole source of revenue is paid job ads in select cities ($75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area; $25 per ad for New York and Los Angeles), and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($10 per ad).

It serves over 4 billion page views per month, putting it in 30th place overall among Internet companies world wide, 7th place overall among Internet companies in the United States (per Alexa.com on July 8, 2006), to 10 million unique visitors. With over 10 million new classified ads each month, Craigslist is the leading classifieds service in any medium. The site receives over 500,000 new job listings each month, making it one of the top job boards in the world. [2] The classified advertisements range from traditional buy/sell ads and community announcements, to personal ads and even “erotic services”.

Craigslist received a ton of traffic, so if you don’t spam your opportunity, it can be a very helpful free home business marketing tool.

Work at Home Challenges

Monday, October 30th, 2006

“Concentration is the discipline of focusing on a chosen project and ignoring irrelevant
matters.” - Sam Horn

A problem many people encounter is a failure to concentrate. As we build our work at home business, we are often challenged with many things which can keep us from concentrating and getting the job done. Whether it is a family illness, children wanting your attention, or even an unsolicated phone call… we can easily find ourselves out of focus.

The word problem, as we talk about the problem of a lack of concentration, does
not necessarily need to be negative. It simply means the existing situation is
not your ideal situation.

A lack of concentration can misguide us many times. To help us concentrate, we
need to have purpose and vison for what we do. We need to have a plan of action
and an understanding that challenges happen to everyone.

While some distractions are out of our control, most distratctions that cause
a lack of concentration are avoidable. The key is to work from a plan and take
consistent action. This will help you develop a habit of focus and concentration. As
your habits develop, so will your motivation and confidence.

NOTE: Success requires a sustainable motivation. A sustainable motivation is
like the Energizer battery… “it keeps you going, and going, and going!” Having
a sustainable motivation will allow you to overcome the ups and downs of building
your own work from home business without getting derailed from moving toward your main objective.
Begin developing your sustainable motivation today by reading at least ten
minutes a day. Read something uplifting and positive!
Developing a sustainable motivation builds confidence and confidence is important
for keeping you on track and focused in building your work at home business.

Start an eBay Home Business

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Starting an eBay business is effortless with these 10 simple steps.

With more than 2 billion items listed on eBay in the past year, and close to $50 billion sold, the sheer size of this online marketplace can be overwhelming. Fortunately, as eBay has grown, the company has worked hard to make it easier for new sellers to get started and be successful. Here are 10 quick and easy steps for building a business on eBay.

1. Just Do It
Some people aren’t sure where to begin, says Terry Gibbs, founder of IWantCollectibles.com and author of The Auction Revolution. Gibbs has been buying and selling antiques and collectibles online since 1997. At his business’s peak in 2002, Gibbs was auctioning more than 500 items per week. Although the pace of his eBay selling has slowed since, he says, “eBay is the best way to sell [an item] quickly for the most money.”

2. Create a Routine
Next, pick a block of time you’ll devote to your business on eBay. Set aside a certain part of the day, or particular evenings each week, to pack up auctions that have ended, list new items for sale and respond to e-mails from potential buyers, says Gibbs. Not only does such discipline stake out time for your new business, but keeping sold items moving out the door also helps make space for new merchandise.

3. Take a Good Picture
Though item descriptions are important, the photo may be even more essential. Buyers assume the photo is the best-case scenario–that the product probably looks worse in real life, says Justin Hartenstein, 25, founder of Advanced Automotive Concepts in Metairie, Louisiana, which sells custom car headlights. A good photo can make or break a sale.

4. Build Trust
Once you’ve got the eBay process down, your next objective is to boost your feedback rating–the number of positive responses you’ve received after transactions–which helps build trust with members of the eBay community. “If you’re new to eBay, trust is everything,” says Rogers.

5. Stick With a Niche
Once you’ve developed a process for regularly listing and selling items on eBay, it’s time to start specializing. Sellers who specialize in a particular product category have a leg up on people who sell a wide variety of goods. “Specializing gives me the ability to spot a deal,” says Gibbs.

Home Design Business Ideas

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Entrepreneur.com

“There’s a good reason why cable TV networks like HGTV, The Learning Channel and DIY Network have such a huge following from coast to coast: The home design and improvement industry is hot, hot, hot and is showing no signs of cooling off. There may be no better time than the present to tool up your skills and fire up your enthusiasm for a career in this creative and fulfilling field.

But while Americans are keenly interested in home improvement and home design and have made household names out of “Extreme Makeover: Home Editions” Ty Pennington, professional organizer Peter Walsh from “Clean Sweep” and other home design show hosts, the fact is many don’t have the time, talent or inclination to undertake such projects themselves. Or they enthusiastically take up a paintbrush, rearrange the furniture or make a stab at organizing their lives, then toss up their hands in defeat when they realize it’s not as easy as it looks.

All this means there are plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurs like you to start what we are broadly calling a home design business. In our startup guide Home Design Services, we’ve outlined the information you need to start five different home design services: interior design, interior redesign, professional organizing, building preservation/restoration, and faux painting. Here’s a closer look at each of those businesses so you can get feel for the opportunities available in this industry, and what will fit your personality and creativity the best.

Why Most Fail with a Network Marketing Business

Monday, October 30th, 2006

“It is one thing to eliminate ways in which you have blocked yourself, but another to develop the skills to complete things you begin.” - Kenneth Christian

In the world of a network marketing home business we are often faced with the challenge of doing the things others are unwilling to do. In fact, if you desire to become a great leader of leaders in network marketing you must do the things others are unwilling to do.

Many of these things from prospecting to recruiting to leading a team to duplicate your efforts can be a challenge in and of itself. Most people fail miserably at these tasks. They fail not because they can’t complete the task but they fail because they have underdeveloped skills needed to complete the task.

Too often these same people will continue to search for the magical tool or secret formula to help them dramatically take a failing effort to multi-millions in an overnight adventure. Only they find that there really is no magical tool or secret formula. But they continue to search.

It takes 12 years of school plus 4 years of college to get educated to start a $30k to $50k a year job in the traditional workplace. Yet, in network marketing, people will join a business and expect to be earning $10k a month within the first few months. If they don’t earn it, they are off to the next best business opportunity.

Why does this happen? In network marketing, the cost of entry is minimal and most people have a misguided belief that it also requires a low skill level. No wonder 95%+ of those who enter into the network marketing industry fail so miserably.

If you truly want to succeed in your network marketing home business, you must treat it not only as a business but as one would in any profession. This means you start with getting your education. This education begins at Leaders Club. Tap into the training. get coaching. Most importantly, make a commitment to yourself
and the industry to invest in mastering the skills necessary in becoming the success you have always dreamed about becoming.

TIP - Do NOT just eliminate the things standing in your way. You MUST also develop and master the skills necessary to face the challenges and complete the task at hand.

Help for Young Entrepreneurs

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

When Doug Mellinger was a student at Syracuse University in the 1980s, there were almost no programs specifically for students bent on owning their own companies. In fact, he created the college’s first major in entrepreneurship and helped found the Young Entrepreneurs’ Organization, www.eonetwork.org, just so he wouldn’t feel so alone.

“You could count college entrepreneurial programs on one hand in those days,” says Mellinger, now a 42-year-old serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Foundation Source, www.foundationsource.com, a technology company serving philanthropic foundations that’s based in Fairfield, Conn.

A decade later, YEO (now called The Entrepreneurs’ Organization) boasted 10,000 members around the world, and some of its early members had gone on to spark a creative technology revolution that would change the world. “That early movement led to the growth and acceptance of young people in business that boomed during the 1990s. Today, people in their 20s and even teens who own businesses are very accepted, but that wasn’t true before,” Mellinger notes.

Along with that newfound acceptance, young entrepreneurs today enjoy networking groups, educational programs, and competitions aimed at supporting and encouraging their efforts. Here are some resources that can help youthful entrepreneurs get started:

Small Businesses Need a Logo

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Experts urge small business owners to “brand” their businesses with a logo and a set of consistent marketing materials. But they rarely explain the reasons behind this advice. Below are some of some of the benefits of having a professionally designed logo and identity system.

1. To look “bigger.”

2. To increase your chance of getting venture capital or selling a business.

3. To attract more clients. Some clients look for a well-defined company, and “look and feel” may be one of their criteria in making a purchasing decision.

4. To brand yourself.

5. To convey that you are established.

6. To give clients a sense of stability.

7. To be more memorable.

8. To explain your company name.

9. To endear your company name to your clients.

10. To explain an unusual line of business.

11. To show what practices differentiate you from your competition.

12. To stand out in your field.

13. To comply with expectations.

14. To show your commitment and for the sense of personal pride it will add to your practice. In other words, do it for yourself.

These benefits will boost your business and your confidence, so start thinking about developing a logo and identity as soon as possible. [Read Details of each benefit from BusinessWeek]

Entrepreneurs Scare Others To Profitable Business

Friday, October 27th, 2006

MSNBC:

“….. I often hear B-school advisors vigorously warn new grads against entering a business they know nothing about… “If you’re picking a business,” they say, “pick something you know and love.” The reason? Since you’re going to be spending most of your waking hours fussing, worrying about, and promoting it… you darn well better love it!

In the story I’m currently working on, the problem is not that too many enter a world they know nothing about… but the opposite… it’s a world they love far too much — haunted houses.

A hidden industry
In all honesty, I wasn’t even aware of this as a viable industry until I spoke with Leonard Pickel of ‘Haunted Attraction Magazine.” This guy is amazing… he’s got his ‘claws’ into just about every aspect of the haunted house industry… And, I do mean “industry”… complete with several national trade shows www.hauntcon.com … monthly published trade magazines, a cadre of time consultants and endless vendors and suppliers of such specialty products as: Zombie Pinups from www.sinistervisions.com , Haunted Windows www.apparition3d.com , and Sinister Scents “you can smell the fear.”

Home Business Defined

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Wikipedia.org

A Home business or home-based business is any business where the primary office is located in the home quarters, garage or basement. This is generally old school thinking. The acceptance and popularity of such an endeavor may be the realization of a more suitable location, such as an adequate home office partition, or even home office addition.

These days as we think of home-based business owners as working at home, that’s not necessarily the case. Computer trainers, truckers, and interior decorators are just some good examples of business owners who may run home-based businesses, but have to travel to provide their services. The Lure of Entrepreneurship far surpasses this tradition!

Recently more people are choosing to run a home business than ever before. In the past many online home based businesses were suited to an ever-increasing common of professional travel agents aliened with corporate entities, operating home-based businesses, while in turn working for someone else. The modern day work at home professional is more inclined to setup their own affiliate based home business program or marketing venue, in order to sustain a hands on approach to being their own boss!

Work at Home Parents

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Wikipedia.org

A work at home parent is an entrepreneur who works from home and integrates parenting into his or her business activities.

Entrepreneurs choose to run businesses from home for a variety of reasons, including lower business expenses, personal health limitations, eliminating commuting or in order to have a more flexible schedule. This flexibility can give an entrepreneur more options when planning tasks, business and non-business, including parenting duties. While some home-based entrepreneurs opt for childcare outside the home, others integrate child rearing into their work day and workspace. The latter are considered work-at-home parents.

Many WAHPs start home-based businesses in order to care for their children while still creating income. The desire to care for one’s own children, the incompatibility of a 9-to-5 work day with school hours or sick days, and the expense of childcare prompt many parents to change or leave their job in the workforce in order to be available to their children. Many WAHPs build a business schedule that can be integrated with their parenting duties.

Lower Home Business Startup Costs

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Every home business startup knows the drill–you’re big on dreams but short on cash. Fortunately, we’ve got the scoop on how to stretch your budget.

First, says Stephanie Frank, a business consultant and author of The Accidental Millionaire, “You’ve got to have a plan–you’ve got to know what your cash flow is.” Know what you have in your coffers, and always plan for contingencies.

Also try keeping costs down like Jennifer Zan-kan, founder of Jeneration PR, a fashion and beauty PR and marketing agency in Sherman Oaks, California. Starting up in March 2005, Zankan, 30, invested the bulk of her $4,000 in startup money in a laptop and marketing materials with her professional logo. This former attorney stretched her money by doing everything from cutting living expenses to buying a used multifunction printer/fax/copier on eBay. It’s helped her push annual sales well into the six figures.

Simple Home Business Startup Tips

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Don’t Get Stalled at Startup

If you’re like most new or wannabe work at home business owners, you want to hit a home run right from the start. And who can blame you? You’re probably investing the majority of your life savings in your business, so you need it to succeed, right?

Here are eight guidelines you’ll want to follow to help you make sure the home business you’re starting or buying has a fighting chance to survive–for both the short and long term:

1. Find something you’ll enjoy day-to-day.
You’re going to be working a lot of hours each week, most weeks of the year, without much time off at the start. It’s important that you enjoy both what your company does and what running the company entails.

2. Don’t start if you can’t ensure a solid profit margin.
So often people try to get by on the slimmest of margins and wonder why they don’t enjoy owning their business for very long. Make sure your business will have a solid profit margin, which is vital to long-term success.

3. If it’s your first home business venture, think about buying an existing business or a franchise.
You’ll already have enough to learn about running your own business without having to invent everything yourself. Your first business will always be the toughest because you have so much to learn. An existing business or franchise provides a shortcut through much of that process.

Millionaire Entrepreneurs Interviewed

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Interview with Donald Trump and “Rich Dad” from Entrepreneur.

Entrepreneur: As successful entrepreneurs, what would you do to build wealth today? Is real estate a part of it? If so, how can entrepreneurs build wealth in a slowing housing market?

Robert Kiyosaki: When I talk to most people about real estate, they’re thinking about owning a house. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m buying commercial buildings and large tracts of land. I own thousands of acres of land in China, and I bought a mining company to make that land viable mining gold. That’s my formula.

Donald Trump: Real estate is a part of who I am and what I’ve built. As a developer, I would look at the hotel/condo mixed-use concept, but housing is not the only market if you are a developer. I started my career in real estate when it wasn’t really a booming market in New York City. If you wait for perfect conditions, you will be waiting for a long time. I’d keep my focus while being patient and creative.

Do you see changes in how entrepreneurs view success? Do they want more flexibility and other nonfinancial benefits, or are they focused mostly on monetary wealth?

Trump: Entrepreneurs like to have control, which equals more flexibility, and that hasn’t changed. Very few entrepreneurs would welcome the opportunity to work for someone else even if it meant higher income. Entrepreneurs are motivated by independence as well as challenge, knowing they are ultimately responsible for themselves. Monetary success is certainly helpful, but it often becomes more of a score card than anything else.

Kiyosaki: The [entrepreneurs] I talk to are more concerned about their purpose and mission. Making money is just a game to them. People are looking at the meaning of work now. There’s plenty of money.

7 Businesses Perfect for the Home

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Yes, many home businesses do follow the stereotypical evolution from corner of the living room to the corner office.

But there are many small businesses that, in fact, are better suited to the cozy confines of the home front. In this column, I’ll specifically discuss seven businesses that I consider perfect for the work-at-home crowd.

Before I do that, however, you need to understand that are three specific criteria you need to evaluate before you decide to set up shop at home:

1. Client contact. This is perhaps the first issue to tackle in determining whether a business can reasonably remain and prosper at home, or whether it’s better to move it elsewhere. Think carefully how much, if any, sort of client contact your home based business may bring about and, in turn, whether that contact may be suitable for a home office. Gauge how much “professionalism” — at least in the conventional sense of the term — your clients and customers demand. If that can be achieved adequately at home, perhaps through a separate entrance and special meeting room, fine. But for many businesses, the better solution is a separate office.

2. Branding. This is not to suggest that a professional persona can only be achieved outside of the house. Far from it. Rather, it depends more on how the people with whom you work have come to see you and your abilities. If, by chance, you’re an attorney who does a first-class job of representing large companies but does so from the loft of a New England farmhouse, that reputation actually depends, in part, on keeping your office down on the farm. “It really all matters on the brand that you’ve built up,” says Julian Lang, a professor of entrepreneurship at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. “No matter what you do for a living, staying at home can mean you’ve disdained all the trappings. It can be seen as quaint and neat.”……

Increase Home Business Knowledge with Online Training Courses

Successful home business owners are always looking for ways to stay ahead of the curve and ways to stay current on home business trends. But few work at home entrepreneurs have the time to devote to traditional college business courses.

The solution could be Online learning via the Internet, with courses in entrepreneurship. Most college business courses take 15 weeks to complete, but it is possible to find the same high quality courses online, where completion may be a fraction of the time.

Since online courses are not issued at the same time as all students and faculty, you will have the benefit of setting your own schedule around the demands of your home business.

Entrepreneurs on the Rise

Inc.com

Five years ago, Jim Poss, a 28-year-old environmental studies grad from Duke University, was determined to make a living in renewable energy — he had the science and the passion, and a vague idea about selling geothermal energy. What he didn’t have was the slightest clue about starting a business. So, he enrolled in Boston’s Babson College, taking a 12-month intensive program that puts students through the rigors of launching a new business venture.

This year, Seahorse Power Co., a business Poss started at Babson which manufactures and sells solar-powered trash compactors, is poised to break $1 million in sales with customers from New York to Sydney, Australia.

“My home business plan today really hasn’t changed from when I wrote it at Babson,” Poss said. “I totally owe it to that program for getting my feet solidly on the ground.”

That kind of success — on top of a surge in the number and size of endowments from wealthy entrepreneurs — is sparking a boom in entrepreneurial education at business schools from coast to coast. In the early 1980s, only 300 universities in the U.S. offered courses in small business and entrepreneurships, according to a survey released in June by the Indiana University’s Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Today, there are over 2,200 courses available at over 1,600 schools nationwide, complete with 277 endowed faculty positions, 44 academic journals, and nearly 150 research centers, the survey found.

Become an eBay Trading Assistant
Are you a stellar eBay seller? Consider using your expertise for a profit.

Everyone knows eBay is a shopping hot spot. It is the source for everything from hard-to-find collectibles to great deals on used merchandise to new and used cars.

eBay currently has 193 million registered users, 575 million listings and annual sales consistently rising at a double-digit pace. But most of the users are buyers. What many people don’t realize is that there is an even bigger opportunity on the sales side of the equation.

eBay spotted that opportunity back in 2002, when it began receiving calls and e-mails from people asking for referrals to experienced sellers, says Skip McGrath, eBay PowerSeller and author of How to Start and Run an eBay Consignment Business. In response, the company created the eBay Trading Assistant program. Today, being an eBay Trading Assistant is a great way to profit by helping others sell their products, either from your home or a retail location.

Trading Up
Trading Assistants are individuals with an eBay account in good standing, have proven their familiarity with the eBay sales process by listing at least 10 items in the past 90 days, and have a feedback rating of at least 100 (meaning they completed at least 100 transactions), with at least 97 percent of it positive. These individuals can be listed in the Trading Assistant directory, which connects prospective sellers to profit-motivated sales help.
